FRIENDSHIP BAND aka. FRIENDSHIP BRACELET

Friendship bracelets are special bracelets given from one friend to another as a symbol of friendship.
They are handmade and usually made out of embroidery floss or thread.
The making of friendship bracelets is a version of macrame.
Because of their versatility, they are worn by both males and females of all ages.
They are particularly popular with pre-teen and adolescent girls and with present-day hippies, deadheads or Rainbow Family participants.
Thicker bracelets are commonly worn by both male and female surfers.

The knot-craft and hand weaving used to create traditional patterns stems from Native American handcrafts, particularly from Central American tradition.
According to indigenous tradition, the recipient of a friendship bracelet must wear it until the cords wear out and fall off naturally.
The idea is that the friend paid for it with the hard work and love that made it, and the recipient repays the friend by honoring the work.
Removing the bracelet before it naturally falls off is a sign that the friendship has gone sour.
Another variation of this tradition is that the recipient of a bracelet is entitled to a wish.
After the bracelet wears out and falls off naturally, the wish will come true.

I am happy to have received orders from customers asking for the same spiral designs that they saw on my blogshop. I am very glad that they like my designs and would want the same for their own bands. Having said that, I usually encourage customers to choose their own colours instead of getting a replicate. That way, the band will be a personalised one that reflects their choices.

This is one of those. My design, your colours.

I was asked to make a spiral and a name band for R* and her friend respectively. R* requested that a heart follow after the name for the name band. She picked 2 colours for each band and from the combination, I figured out that she was after an "candied-effect".

As I ponder over for the best presentation possible, it struck me that a cursive font would lend an elegant touch to the name band. I also felt that using title case would give a softer effect, blending well with the "candied" colours. I brought up my suggestions to R* and she promptly agreed. The cursive font is a more complicated one to weave and is also bigger than the straight conventional one. I spent a considerable length of time designing the letters and finally getting the band woven.

As for the spiral band, I designed it with patterns which alternate between baby blue and pink. The end product is really cute!
R* has been a gem since her first email to me and I really wanted her and her friend to have really pretty bands, and I took care to ensure that.

I was asked to make 2 Spiral ankles bands. The customer picked 2 colours for each band and I really like his choice and how he matches them.

The customer did not have any specific ideas as to how the patterns on his bands should appear. Most spiral bracelets are made of coloured thread woven to the same length. I wanted to break this convention and to do so, I designed a pattern for each of the band so that they will really stand out. After the bands were woven, they were nicely attached to a handmade card and finally placed and sealed in a green envelope. Why green? Some people asked. That's because the colour always remind me of the nature- it is the colour of grass, apples, trees.. you get the idea :)

Here are the Spirals:
